Robyn's Egg Blues

I found an egg at the bus stop in Montauk
It called my name from the cracks in the sidewalk
I picked it up and wrapped it in my sweater
And took it to my home where things would be better
I got the Robyn's egg blues
I got the Robyn's egg blues
From the top of my head to the soles of my shoes
The Robyn's egg blues
The Robyn's egg blues
And I'm singin' them all the way home
At home I've got a light
That I bought for my depression
I laid my swaddled egg in front of this invention
With a mason jar of water in case he gets thirsty
And left him with a kiss to go to work till eight-thirty
I got the Robyn's egg blues
I got the Robyn's egg blues
From the top of my head to the soles of my shoes
The Robyn's egg blues
The Robyn's egg blues
And I'm singin' them all the way to work
I came back home to the smell of burnt butter
I looked around and amidst all the clutter
I found in the sink a yolk-stained plate
And the carnage in the garbage said it's much too late
I got the Robyn's egg blues
I got the Robyn's egg blues
The tears on my face say I paid all my dues
The Robyn's egg blues
The Robyn's egg blues
It was an eating egg all along
Oh an eating egg all along

Hallelujah

Well I heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the lord
But you don't really care for music do you?
And it goes like this, the fourth, the fifth,
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Well baby I've been here before
I've seen these rooms I've walked these floors
I used to live alone before I knew you
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you?
And remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Well maybe there's a god above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

Last night I dreamed I was the moon
A waning sliver in the sky
I felt my body getting smaller
And knew tomorrow night I'd die
And so I thought that I should tell you
That though I hide behind the clouds
I've always felt the earth a-turning
And it goes faster when you're 'round
And when the nettles sting
And when my heart starts singing
I look for Jewelweed
Oh and I used to be a schoolboy
Who got in one too many fights
I'd go around jaded to daytime
And I'd get scared alone at night
Now I am grown and things are different
I work and sleep and write my songs
Highway exploring in the evening
Sometime I might ask you along
And when the tall grass rustles
And when I wanna tussle
I think of Jewelweed
I'd like to meet you in the garden
Among the flowered, fruiting plants
We'd smoke Nat Shermans in the moonlight
Might even ask you for a dance
And so I thought I'd let you know
In so few words
I like you, Jewelweed
